What to Look for in Educational Games for Teens?

Choosing educational games for teenagers can feel like a daunting task with all the options available. It’s tough to find games that provide genuine learning without resembling traditional schoolwork. Just last week, I spent hours exploring different games, hoping to find ones that would engage my teens while also being educational. I’m really looking for something that combines fun with a meaningful learning experience.

I’ve checked out various platforms and game recommendations, but I’m still wondering what really makes a game appealing to teens. Is it the storyline, the level of interactivity, or the themes they explore? Have any of you found specific games that manage to hit the sweet spot between being enjoyable and educational?

What criteria do you prioritize when selecting educational games for your teens? Are there any titles that have been a big hit in your home?

Have you tried anything like “Kerbal Space Program”? It’s super fun and teaches physics and engineering concepts, but the kids just see it as a cool game. I’m curious if narrative-driven games work better for others, though. What are your thoughts on those?

I’ve had some luck with games that let teens create their own scenarios or challenges. Like Minecraft: Education Edition - they learn about coding and design without it feeling like school. Another one that worked well is Portal 2 for the logic puzzles. Not sure if it’s the same for everyone, but having a game that feels like an adventure really helps keep them engaged!
