What speech development milestones should I watch for with my toddler?

As parents, it’s natural to worry about whether our little ones are meeting their speech development milestones. My toddler is two and a half, and while he knows a few words, I often hear about kids his age who are already putting together sentences. This sometimes makes me anxious, wondering if I’m doing enough to support his speech skills.

From what I’ve read, by age two, children usually have around 50 words and can combine two words into simple phrases. However, there’s so much information out there that it’s tough to know what’s typical and what might need more attention. Are there specific activities or daily routines that have helped your kids reach these milestones?

How do you all encourage speech development without adding stress? Have any particular strategies worked well for you? I’d love to hear your experiences!

At that age, we just talked a ton to our kid, like narrating everything we were doing and asking questions. Also, reading together really seemed to help; we’d try to pick books with a lot of repetition and funny sounds. I think keeping it fun is key, so it feels less like pressure!

My kid was a late talker too, and honestly, I found that reading daily really helped. We started with simple picture books and repeated phrases, and it seemed to click for him over time. Also, ask lots of questions during playtime; it encourages them to express themselves without pressure.
