What screen time limits work best for teens?

Lately, I’ve been struggling to find the right screen time limits for my teens. With so many distractions like social media, video games, and streaming services, it’s tough to set boundaries without coming off as too strict. I’ve noticed that my kids are spending more time online and less time on activities I think are important, like reading and playing outside.

It’s tricky to figure out what’s reasonable. I want to give them space to be independent but also make sure they’re not on their screens all day. I’ve tried talking openly about their online habits and suggesting a variety of activities, but it often feels like an uphill battle.

What strategies have you all used to navigate this? How do you manage the balance between screen time and encouraging other interests?

I get the struggle. I tried setting a specific “no screens after 8 PM” rule, which helped a bit, but my kids weren’t thrilled about it. They’ve started picking up books more, but it usually takes a bit of nudging to get them off their devices first. What other activities have you noticed they actually enjoy when they’re away from screens?

I’ve had some luck with a simple rule: for every hour they spend on screens, they have to do an hour of something non-screen related. It’s kind of made it a game and they actually enjoy it more than I expected. Plus, involving them in picking the activities helps a lot.
