What are your tips for managing teen screen time?

Finding a balance for teen screen time can be quite challenging. With school, social interactions, and hobbies all happening on screens, it’s tough to set limits that feel fair yet necessary. It’s frustrating when discussions about screen time often lead to confrontations, particularly when kids stay on their devices long past the agreed cutoff times.

What strategies have you found effective in establishing boundaries with your teenagers? It’s also important to guide them towards using their devices productively rather than just scrolling through social media or gaming. Do you have any recommendations for apps or tools that help monitor or manage screen time? How do you keep the dialogue open about developing healthy tech habits?

One thing that worked for us is setting specific times for screen use, like only allowing devices after homework and chores are done. We also try using apps like Circle to manage screen time together, which makes it a team effort instead of just me enforcing rules. It’s definitely helped keep the peace while still giving them the freedom to connect and unwind.

One thing that helped us was creating a family tech night where we all share what we’re doing online. It made the conversation easier, and my teens actually started to show me cool new apps and games. As for managing screen time, we use an app called FamilyTime that lets you set limits without constant nagging.
