What are the key factors in choosing a school for your child?

Deciding on a school for your child can be quite daunting, especially in a city like Atlanta where options are plentiful. With so many things to consider—such as the curriculum, teacher-student ratio, and extracurricular activities—it’s hard to know where to begin. I want to make sure my kid has a solid foundation, but I also don’t want to get lost in rankings and reputations that may not reflect the actual experience.

Some parents advocate for neighborhood schools, while others prefer specialized programs that cater to their child’s individual interests. I’ve been going to school tours and open houses, but it’s challenging to determine the right fit based on a single visit. On top of that, juggling this search with my work commitments has made things even tougher.

What factors did you prioritize when you were choosing a school? How did you recognize when you found the right fit for your child?

One thing that helped me was talking to other parents in the neighborhood and getting their take on the schools. Sometimes, you get the real scoop that you won’t find online. Also, visiting during a school day gave me a better sense of the vibe than tours at open houses. Good luck with your search!

When I picked a school for my kid, I focused a lot on the school culture and how comfortable the staff made both my kid and me feel during visits. Rankings are one thing, but seeing how engaged the teachers are with students was huge for us. Also, talking to other parents in the neighborhood really helped—it gave me a better sense of what to expect.
