What are some effective ways to support a 5 year old's development?

Supporting a 5-year-old through their developmental milestones can be a bit of a rollercoaster. As they begin to assert their independence, it’s natural to feel both excited and anxious about their growth. I remember when my older kids were at this stage, and the pressure to ensure they were developing their social skills, language abilities, and emotional intelligence was overwhelming at times.

At this age, children often communicate their feelings more clearly, but they might still struggle with managing those emotions. This can sometimes result in outbursts or tantrums, leaving us unsure of how to respond. For us, establishing consistent routines and setting clear expectations has proven helpful, but I’m curious if others have discovered additional strategies that work.

What techniques have you found effective in supporting your 5-year-old’s development? Do you have any tips for handling emotional outbursts while still encouraging their independence?

I’ve found that using simple breathing exercises really helps my kid when emotions run high. We practice it together during calm times, so it’s easier for them to use during a tantrum. Also, storytelling seems to help them express their feelings better instead of just acting out. What kind of routines do you have in place?
