Is it safe for my newborn to sleep with a pacifier?

I’ve been researching pacifiers because my newborn seems to want to suck for comfort, and I’m thinking about introducing one. However, I’ve come across mixed information regarding their safety during sleep.

Some experts suggest that using a pacifier might lower the risk of SIDS, while others warn against using them too early. I’m concerned about any potential risks and whether it could lead to dependency later on. Have any of you dealt with this decision? What has your experience been like using a pacifier for sleep with your newborn?

I’d appreciate any thoughts or tips you have!

I get where you’re coming from, but I think the concerns about dependency can sometimes be overstated. My baby took a pacifier from a few weeks old and it really helped them settle down for naps. We stuck to using it just for sleep and eventually they lost interest in it on their own around six months. As for SIDS, the advice varies, but some studies do suggest that using a pacifier can actually reduce the risk. Just be sure to follow safe sleep guidelines!

I think it really depends on the baby. We introduced a pacifier to our little one pretty early on because he loved to suck for comfort, and we were really careful about using it just for sleep. Overall, we found it helped him settle down quickly.

As for the SIDS concern, I did read that using a pacifier during naps and bedtime can actually lower the risk, but I always made sure it was a safe sleep environment. Just keep an eye on any dependency issues as they get older; some kids can be quite attached! Have you thought about how you might transition them away from it later if needed?
