Is Breastfeeding a Real Weight Loss Aid or Just Wishful Thinking?

You’ve just welcomed your little one into the world, and between feedings, diaper changes, and the inevitable sleep deprivation, you might be looking in the mirror wondering when you’ll feel like yourself again. One of the benefits often mentioned about breastfeeding is its potential for helping with weight loss. But how realistic is that? As a parent to toddlers who knows the struggle of sleepless nights, I’m starting to think that the baby weight might be more stubborn than I hoped.

I’ve heard all kinds of stories from friends: some lost weight rapidly while nursing, while others said it didn’t impact their weight at all. With everything else going on in life, I’m really curious about how often breastfeeding actually leads to weight loss. For those of you who have been there, what was your experience? Did breastfeeding help you shed those extra pounds, or was it more about the everyday chaos of parenting burning off calories?

What tips do you have for new parents looking to possibly benefit from breastfeeding in their weight loss journey? Any unexpected experiences you’d like to share?

I think it varies a lot! I breastfed and honestly didn’t see much weight loss for me—it felt like my body was holding onto that extra weight for dear life. But when I started getting more active after a few months, that made a bigger difference. So maybe just focusing on movement can help alongside breastfeeding!
