How Does Culture Influence Parenting Styles Today?

Living in Atlanta, I’ve been struck by the variety of parenting styles that emerge from our diverse cultural backgrounds. Some families lean towards strict discipline, while others emphasize open communication and emotional support. As a parent of mixed-age kids, I’ve noticed how their friends’ parenting approaches influence my kids’ behavior and emotional responses, especially during those inevitable tantrums.

I’ve been experimenting with different techniques to promote emotional regulation in my kids, but I often wonder how much our culture shapes what feels right for our family. Do any of you incorporate specific practices from your cultural background into your parenting? Or have you adjusted your approach based on the cultural influences around you?

What strategies do you find effective for handling those tough moments with your kids? I’d love to hear how others manage this balance!

I totally hear you! I’ve been trying to blend ideas from my Hispanic heritage, like big family gatherings, with more modern, flexible parenting. When my kids have tantrums, I use some calming techniques I learned from friends with different backgrounds—deep breathing helps a lot! Would love to hear more about what has worked for you!
