How do you choose family activities that engage teens?

Finding activities that both engage my teens and promote family bonding can be really tough. With their busy schedules and different interests, it often feels like putting together a puzzle. Just last weekend, we tried having a game night, but my daughter ended up retreating to her room halfway through, and my son was glued to his phone. Balancing their independence with quality family time is definitely a challenge.

I’m curious how other parents handle this. What are your strategies for picking activities that appeal to teenagers? Have you discovered any hobbies or outings that work well for your family? I’d love to hear your ideas to help create a more inviting atmosphere that encourages them to join in.

I get the struggle! What worked for us was letting our teens pick the activity once in a while. Last month, my son wanted to try mini-golf, and it turned into a blast—everyone actually had fun and no one was on their phone! Maybe letting them take the lead could help get them more involved.

Have you tried involving them in the planning? Like, ask what they’d actually enjoy doing. We’ve had some luck with things like escape rooms or virtual reality experiences—way more engaging than game night!
