How do you choose activities for kids of different ages?

Finding activities that captivate both younger and older children can be a real challenge. It often feels like what excites one child can quickly bore another. For instance, we recently tried a family game night with a variety of board games, but it didn’t go as planned; some kids lost interest before we even finished the first game.

What strategies do other parents use to keep mixed-age kids engaged? Are there specific activities that seem to work well across different age groups? Or is it mostly a process of trial and error for your family? I’d appreciate any tips or experiences you all might share!

Instead of focusing on one activity, try having a few different things available at once. For example, set up a craft station, a game corner, and maybe some outdoor games, so kids can choose what they want to do. It keeps everyone engaged and makes it easier to lure them back when they start to lose interest.

We’ve had some luck with outdoor activities like scavenger hunts or building forts. It keeps everyone moving and engaged, plus older kids can help the younger ones figure stuff out. It’s way more fun than sitting around a table trying to keep everyone focused!
