Parenting teens in 2026 can feel like a balancing act. Each of Baumrind’s four parenting styles—authoritative, authoritarian, permissive, and uninvolved—brings its own approach, and it can be difficult to determine which aligns best with our family values. Personally, I tend to favor the authoritative style, which focuses on open communication and emotional support, but I often wonder if this is the best match for my teens’ individual personalities.
While my approach encourages honest discussions, I sometimes question if I’m being too lenient. As they move toward young adulthood, should I adjust my parenting style, or do those core principles still apply? It’s a tricky balance between providing guidance and allowing them the independence they crave.
How do you modify Baumrind’s styles in your own parenting? Have you found a specific style that works best for your family?
