Can Parents Realistically Make Money in Childcare?

As a parent, I’m sure many of us have thought about ways to earn some extra income while still managing our kids’ needs. With rising costs in 2026, the idea of making money in childcare, whether through babysitting, running a daycare, or offering classes, can be tempting. But the logistics can be quite daunting.

I’ve heard that starting a small, home-based daycare might be a good option since it can blend into our daily routines. However, I have questions about the regulations and the upfront costs involved. Some parents also consider hosting workshops or playgroups, but do those options really attract enough interest to be worthwhile?

Have any of you ventured into childcare for profit? What challenges did you encounter, and do you think it was worth the effort? I’d love to hear any tips you have on balancing this with parenting!

I tried a home daycare for a bit last year, and honestly, it was a struggle to fill spots while managing my own kids. The regulations were a nightmare, and I spent way more on supplies than I expected. Playgroups sounded fun, but they barely drew anyone. I’d say if you go that route, be ready for a lot of work and not much return!

I tried doing some babysitting a while back, but honestly, I found it hard to balance with my own kids. It can feel like a lot of extra work for not that much pay. I’ve heard running a daycare can be more profitable, but the rules around licensing and insurance seem like a headache. Just curious if anyone’s had success with those workshops, too!
